Through the lens: My top 10 quirky memories of New York

Manhattan Island is a truly amazing place, full of so many vibrant sights, sounds and people, but while I was there I saw some things that were very funny, strange and quirky. These things really stick in my memory and to me, make Manhattan the unique place that it is.

Doggy bag with a difference: I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this girl in some loos with her pet (real) dog! She let me take this photo and said she was photographed all the time! She said her dog prefers to travel this way! I guess it’s the best way of getting your dog safely around a very busy city.

Scaffolding art: With so much scaffolding around the city it can become a real eye-sore. This is a great way of hiding it. We saw some really clever tromp-l’oeil scaffolding art around the city.

Fire escape garden: I particularly loved this window box of sun flowers I spotted while on a coach trip. I guess people living in apartments don’t have much outdoor space of their own. This is a really nice use of a tiny space on the fire escape – the yellow flowers certainly brighten up a dull building!

Tavern on the Green, restaurant in Central Park: This beautiful restaurant in Central Park was one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve seen.  There were gorgeous lanterns hanging up all around the restaurant and at night time looked truely magical.  We were booked to go for a meal but were so exhausted by our day in NYC we fell asleep and totally missed dinner. The restaurant has now sadly closed so we will never get the chance to go back to eat – I believe it is now a gift shop.

Rooftop gardens: I saw many of these in the city, bits of greenery poking out the top of apartments and office blocks. I imagine it would be wonderful having a lovely garden with such an amazing view!

What a job!: Many large buildings in the city are painted on one or two sides with large murials, advertisements or just plain colour.  These guys who do the painting are either mad, adrenaline junkies or skint! At least they will always have work! Fair play to them.

Street protest: I’m not sure what these people were protesting about but I’ve never seen such a peaceful protest before.

Turtle pond in Central Park: We were just walking along in Central Park when we spotted these turtles! It was quite a surpsirse! Aparantly there are 5 types of turtles in this lake – mostly originated from unwanted pets!

The whole store is below ground with just the entrance cube above ground – so very cool.

Rickety old fire escapes: In so many films you see people leaving buildings via fire escapes only to end either falling to their death or hanging from them as the metal has given way and collasped. Or you see people climbing them to get away from cops or villans or as in Pretty Woman, the knight the shining armour climbing them to rescue their true love! When I saw this fire escape it reminded me of that last scene in Pretty Woman…

I’d love to hear your quirky memories of NYC if you are lucky enough to have been there…
